The Substance

Released in by Mubi on 20 September 2024.

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? This question is one that forms the premise of The Substance, the new body horror from visionary director Coralie Fargeat.

“The Most Sickly Entertaining Theatrical Experience of the year”

Indiewire

The iconic Demi Moore gives a striking performance as washed-up TV personality Elisabeth Sparkle, who faces a devastating blow on her 50th birthday as her boss fires her. Amid her distress, a laboratory offers her a substance which promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself. The film also stars indie-darling Margaret Qualley (Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness) and The Parent Trap’s Dennis Quaid as you’ve never seen him before.

After splitting audiences (see what we did there) at Cannes earlier this year, The Substance is bound to be one of this year’s biggest (and likely most divisive) releases. But after Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described the film as a ‘cathartically grotesque fusion of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Showgirls’ we knew The Substance was at the top of our list.
