Kneecap

Released in UK by Curzon on 23 August 2024.

Of the 80,000 native Irish speakers, 6,000 live in the North of Ireland and three of them became a rap group called Kneecap. A unique fusion of fact and fiction with Kneecap members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí all playing themselves, Rich Peppiatt’s debut feature Kneecap is a music biopic like no other that tracks both the bands meteoric rise to fame and their staunch defence of the Irish language, which they rap in primarily.

“Bursting with unruly energy that practically escapes the confines of the screen, Kneecap is a riotous, drug-laced triumph in the name of freedom that bridges political substance and crowd-pleasing entertainment.”

A result of years of friendship and collaboration after Peppiatt watched the band perform in Belfast back in 2019 and went on to direct their ‘Guilty Conscience’ music video, the film marks the bands first ever acting stint (although the quality of their performances makes this hard to believe) with two time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender also starring.

The first ever Irish Language film to premiere at Sundance, where it took home the prestigious audience award, Kneecap is bound to make waves on its release, and for good reason. A wild, drug-filled trip around Belfast brimming with originality, Kneecap is one to watch with the biggest crowd possible.
