Queer
Released in the UK by Mubi on 13 December 2024.
His second release this year, Challengers director Luca Guadagnino returns with a unique adaptation of one of William S. Burroughs’ lesser-known works - Queer.
Collaborating again with Challengers screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and composing duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Guadagnino’s latest film takes place in New Mexico, as it follows the lonely existence of middle-aged expat William (played by Daniel Craig). Soon, he meets Eugene (played by Drew Starkey), a much younger man who interrupts William’s monotonous life to potentially offer the intimacy he’s been craving.
“a haunting odyssey of queer loneliness and disembodiment”
Far Out
One of his first films since his 15-year stint as James Bond came to an end in 2021, Daniel Craig gives a masterful and sensitive performance as a character who desperately yearns for more meaningful connections than life has offered him.
A more subdued cinema experience that Challengers, Queer is no less powerful in its depiction of queer loneliness and unrequited love, further cementing Guadagnino as one of the most exciting and versatile directors working today.
