Past Lives
Released in UK by Studio Canal on 8 Sept 2023.
We’ve noticed that this incredible film, which transports us from South Korea to Canada to America, does something wonderful to everyone who experiences it.
Past Lives is Celine Song’s debut film about a pair of reconnecting childhood sweethearts and it makes everyone think it is for them.
“A stunning pitch perfect romance” - Rolling Stone
Some audiences connect with the idea of being in a long term relationship but wondering about the adult lives of their childhood loves.
Others glow with nostalgia with the theatrical and romantic use of Facebook and Skype.
Some relate to the idea of dreaming in a different language to their partner and reflecting on a past with a different language & culture.
And for you it might be something else entirely.
The title of the film is based in the Korean idea of “in-yun” , the connection between people — the red string of fate which tangles together across different lifetimes. . .
“There is a word in Korean. In-Yun. It means providence. or fate.
do you belive in that?”
. . . and this is a perfect example of how Past Lives presents as subtle and soft but it is in fact layered and powerful.
Regarded by many as the stand out standout film at Sundance in January 2023 as well as at the Berlin Film Festival, it is one of those special films that stays with you and evolves in your mind as it tangles with your own memories and stories.
Don’t Miss!
ps. The soundtrack album is stunning too!! It features the film's original score composed by Grizzly Bear's Christopher Bear (High Maintenance, Swallowed) & Daniel Rossen (The Line). Also included is the song Quiet Eyes by Sharon Van Etten, which has be released digitally in all the usual places.
